Panoramic 34

Modern British

Panoramic 34 was the UK’s highest restaurant when it opened in 2008, and although others have since taken that title, it still offers an impressive vantage point with a 360-degree view of Liverpool, the Mersey, and beyond to Wales.

The normal rule for spectacular restaurants is that they don’t deliver with the food. Not so here since ambitious head chef Elliot Hill arrived in January 2020.

His revamped menus include a prix fixe, lunch, tasting, and Sunday signature menu, amongst others. The afternoon tea and bar menus are your best bet if you’re here for the view rather than the gastronomy. Book a table in their cocktail lounge if that’s the case.

Otherwise, we recommend the prix fixe which showcases Hill’s creative ways with local, seasonal produce. Typical dishes include a starter of Cumbrian beef tartare with Jerusalem artichoke, pickled mushroom, Marmite, and nasturtium, and a main of Isle of Gigha halibut with potatoes, seaweed, dill and warm tartare sauce. The cheesecake-like dessert of lemon, mascarpone and sorrel comes recommended.

The statuesque wine list spans 16 pages including English producers Henners, Gusbourne and Nyetimber. From the cocktail list, try the Versailles Garden with cognac, apple juice, vanilla syrup and rosemary.
