Warton Crag
For expansive views of Morecambe Bay and up-close sightings of wildflowers and rare butterflies, head to Warton Crag Nature Reserve, near Carnforth in Lancashire.
This limestone crag is a designated Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of the range of flora and wildlife found here. It’s also the highest point in the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and a marvellous spot for surveying the surrounding landscape.
The walks here are steep but not particularly long – you can do a circular hike from the car park, through woodland, up to the summit and back, within an hour. Look out for peregrine falcons nesting in the huge disused quarry you’ll pass on the way.
For a post-walk pint and artisan pork pie, head to the Old School Brewery, a microbrewery and pub, ten minutes walk from the car park.
