Lock 84
Lock 84 is the all-day restaurant and bar inside four-star hotel The Reach, which opened on Ducie Street in summer 2024. With its preference for locally-sourced ingredients and chic, characterful design, it feels more Northern Quarter independent than international hotel chain. In reality it sits somewhere between the two.
The Reach is one of the Marriott’s upmarket and highly individual Tribute Portfolio hotels; boutique stays that reflect the personality of the city they’re in, rather than the could-be-anywhere aesthetic of a worldwide brand.
At Lock 84, local character shines through in the interior design which subtly hints at canal barges and industry, and in the made-in-Manchester produce sourced for the sharing menu and bar.
Coffee is roasted round the corner at Worker Bee, and the hotel’s IPA is brewed by Salford’s Seven Bro7hers. Local influences are dotted across the afternoon tea menu, brunches, and sharing plates. Look out for Vimto-laced sauces, locally-baked breads, and an excellent Manchester scotched egg. Even the breakfast has a distinctly Northern vibe with its Manchester Muffin. It’s all the work of a talented, creative kitchen team led by executive chef Chris Hall.
The restaurant overlooks the Rochdale Canal; specifically Lock 84, hence the name. It’s also very close to more modern day transport connections. It’s about 90 seconds’ walk from Piccadilly Station (if you take the side exit from the station concourse) meaning you can have an expertly made espresso martini in your hand within a few minutes of stepping off the train.
There are a lot of options in this neighbourhood for drinks and all-day dining. Lock 84 competes with the best of them. Convenient, chic and not over-priced, it’s fast becoming a city centre favourite.
