The Baum

British

Situated in Rochdale’s Toad Lane conservation area, The Baum is a traditional pub that has one foot firmly in the present day.

Behind the green-tiled frontage you’ll find a dim-lit interior that feels contemporary despite the gloss paint and dark oak fittings. It’s in part thanks to a cask ale selection that pushes the boundaries of what you’d expect from a classic boozer. And partly thanks to the food, which bridges pub classics with tapas and elements of modern British.

First though, the beer. The Baum was once crowned Britain’s Best Pub by the Campaign for Real Ale. Their range changes regularly with eight hand pumps and two craft keg, and includes local breweries alongside more far-flung options.

On the food menu, their homemade chicken and mushroom pie with chicken salt chips gets rave reviews. Other typical options include beef and bone marrow burger with smoked bacon chutney, peppercorn mayo, smoked cheese custard, salad stack and beef dripping chips. Or for vegetarians, smoked cheese and confit tomato tart with roasted beetroot and watercress salad.

There’s a walled beer garden (covered and uncovered) at the back, and a private dining room on the first floor.

The Baum isn’t officially the ‘best’ pub in Britain any more but it’s certainly one of the finest in the North West. Add it to your list.
