The Clarence

The décor doesn’t stray far from the original in The Clarence – a large, comfortable pub dating back to 1905. But that’s not to say it’s lacking in style: think old wood floors and a large, welcoming entrance.

A elegant and airy dining room on the first floor is ideal for Sunday lunch or weeknight romance. While a weekly pop-up cocktail bar up on the very top floor makes for a very special Friday night.

Menus include a veggie menu, lunch, sandwiches, dinner and Sunday roast. Dishes change often but could include an excellent (and generous) rack of lamb, black pudding and leek croquettes with a porter sauce, homemade ham hock and cider terrine or beef and oxtail suet pudding.

Modern pub classics, such as burgers and Cumberland sausage are great – and great value. While 28-day aged beef rump is the foundation of the popular Sunday roast.

Finish off with desserts such as tonka bean creme brulee, chocolate brownie with caramel and Black Forest gateau. The kind of place you wish was just around the corner.
