Yuzu
JapaneseAn oasis of calm in bustling Chinatown. Yuzu is a neighbourhood-style Japanese restaurant offering refreshingly uncomplicated dishes served in Zen-like surroundings. You won’t find a conveyor belt of sushi here, but something altogether more traditional such as spanking fresh sashimi.
The core of the menu is a range of big rice bowls such as donburi (seasoned sushi rice) or plump udon noodles topped tasty grilled meats, or light tempura and finished with a seaweed garnish. The agedashi tofu is a highlight, its delicate, crisp coating gives way to a quivering, melt in the mouth middle.
A daily chalkboard of specials might include Oyster katsu, seared tuna with ginger or occasionally grilled whole sea bream all prepared with that typically Japanese balance of precision and simplicity.
There is a carefully chosen range of award-winning sake and classic Japanese bottled beers to wash it all down, highlighted by Hitachino Ales imported from Japan with varieties such as Red Rice Ale, Saison du Japon, Dai Dai (Japanese orange) Ale, Espresso Stout and Sweet Stout.
