Werneth Low Country Park
Werneth Low Country Park is known for its stunning views over Tameside and Manchester.
The country park was established to recognise the local men who died in the First World War and the war memorial sits at the top of Werneth Low on Hacking Knife, 900ft above sea level. There are impressive views over the city and its burgeoning landscape of skyscrapers. On a clear day you can even see the familiar shape of the telescope at Jodrell Bank and across to the Welsh Hills. It’s a spectacular location to catch a sunset too.
There are three small car parks if you’re visiting and a small visitor centre which is only open on Sundays. The footpaths are well maintained and it’s easy to take a short stroll, a more energetic hike, or even pick up The Trans-Pennine Trail.
The open moorland and wooded areas are a haven for wildlife so make sure you stick to the paths during nesting season and keep dogs under control. From great-crested newts to skylarks, curlews, bats and badgers, who knows what creatures you might spot?
