Liverpool Biennial
Liverpool Biennial is the UK’s largest free contemporary art festival – and one of the reasons the city was named European Capital of Culture in 2008.
Antony Gormley’s Another Place was commissioned as part of the Liverpool Biennial 2005. And many other festival artworks have found a permanent home in the city, including From Here by Nathan Coley – a text based light sculpture on Mann Island, and Jorge Pardo’s sculpture Penelope in Wolstenholme Square. The Dazzle Ferry, by Sir Peter Blake, is another festival commission to look out for.

Liverpool Biennial 2025: Bedrock
Bedrock, the Liverpool Biennial 2025, runs from Saturday 7 June to Sunday 14 September 2025. Curated by Marie-Anne McQuay, it’s inspired by the sandstone that is found underneath the city and in much of its architecture. It’s also a metaphor for the social foundations of Liverpool and the people, places and values that keep us grounded.
Participating artists have installations at Liverpool Cathedral and Liverpool Central Library as well as galleries including Tate Liverpool, The Bluecoat and the Walker Art Gallery.
