A real Northern success story, the second location for Bundobust in Manchester and the fourth in the family of northern-based restaurants (Manchester Piccadilly, Leeds and Liverpool have come before), the Bundobust Brewery is a welcome addition to Oxford Street at the southern part of the city.
With a menu that mirrors its sister restaurants, the food is a reliable selection of Indian-style vegetarian small plates. Expect to find crisp okra fries dusted with black salt and mango powder and the iconic vada pav – a deep-fried mashed potato ball in a bun, with red and green chutneys.
However, as you might imagine, the stars of the show at the Bundo Brewery are the huge bubbling beer tanks that greet you as you walk through the enormous gates at the entrance, and that line the walls as you walk inside.
The owners, Marko Husak and Mayur Patel say that beer is the best beverage to team with the restaurant’s Indian menu, especially when it’s brewed to do just that. Like Cartway, a Vienna lager named for one of the Brewery space’s former lives as a cartway for a calico fabric printer.
The bar is well stocked to serve an interesting selection of classic and house cocktails, all vegan. Try a mango and rose water bramble made with Portobello Road gin or a coconut and mango mojito with mango syrup and fresh mint.
If you’re particularly sensitive to a spicy morsel, a mango lassi might be more your style. It’ll extinguish the burn of the fried green chilli while being creamy, sweet and satisfying to boot.
