Pennington Flash
Pennington Flash is Greater Manchester’s only National Nature Reserve. This wetland habitat, formed by flash flooding of former coal mining sites, is home to all sorts of wildlife. With a number of bird hides dotted around, you might even be lucky enough to spot a kingfisher or a willow tit – a titchy little warbler that has seen a massive decline in population.
The nearest birdwatching group is Leigh Ornithological Society if you want to get in touch with like-minded twitchers. Alternatively, take your binoculars and enjoy the stillness and calm of waiting for some feathered friends to make their appearance.
There are easy trails around the wetlands, many of which are suitable for buggies or young children and the play area is very good.
If you’re after more exercise than just a simple stroll there are Nordic walking groups and cycleways and bridle paths too. There’s also a nine-hole golf course and sailing, windsurfing and open water swimming at Swim Pennington, based at at Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club on the other side of the water from the bird hides.
